Twenty year old junior middleweight Danny "Kid"Ahrens has dealt with an injured hand since his fourth pro fight in October. According to Barry Toberman of TheJC.com, the injury worsened during his next fight a month later.
The 5-0 Israel native has undergone surgery and will need rest to have any chance to come back to the ring. Danny's manager, Robert Waterman, told Toberman, "Danny wanted to do nothing other than professional boxing since he was a child. He is devastated."

Ahrens Moves to 5-0
Danny Ahrens remained undefeated with a points victory over Duane Green last month. The fight took place at Park Plaza Hotel in London, England.
Ahrens started the first round by landing his jab before adding combinations. He was on the attack early as the crowd chanted his name. Reports claim that Ahrens hurt his right hand in the first round, but he continued to use that hand throughout the bout.
Ahrens, a 20 year old from Tel Aviv, won the second round on the strength of his body punching. Green hit Ahrens with a solid low blow in that round and it clearly took something out of Ahrens. Danny spent too much of the third round with his back to the ropes. Green was still not very accurate even with Ahrens in such a vulnerable state. Ahrens boxed effectively in the fourth.
Referee Robert Williams scored the bout 40-37 in favor of Ahrens. In Britain, only the referee scores non-title fights.
The impressive thing about Ahrens is he improves every fight. His punches were straighter, his aggression was more controlled and effective, and he was off balance less compared to previous outings. But Ahrens has an annoying habit of switching to southpaw with limited results. In the first round, when Ahrens turned lefty, it allowed Green to have his only success of the round. When Ahrens did land with overhand lefts, they had far less steam that his punches have from the orthodox stance.
After the fight, Ahrens improved to 5-0 with one KO and Green moved to 1-4-1 with zero KOs.

Ahrens wins Fourth Fight
Junior middleweight Danny "Kid" Ahrens defeated Lewis Van Poetsch on October 17 by way of four-round points victory at the Park Plaza Hotel in London, England. After an eight and a half month layoff, Ahrens was more aggressive and landed the hard punches throughout most of the fight.
Van Poetsch, a British soldier and competent boxer, jabbed early in the fight. But he quickly cast aside that plan when Ahrens rushed him with power punches. Danny had the faster hands and Van Poetsch soon made sure his gloves were high in a defensive position for much of the first three rounds.
Ahrens attacked the body early with both hands. His looping overhand right rocked his opponent on several occasions in the first three minutes. Van Poetsch tagged Ahrens with a solid left hook towards the end of the opening round, but, to that point, he had been thoroughly outworked.
Van Poetsch tried to jab early in the second, but soon covered up instead. Ahrens overwhelmed Van Poetsch in the third round with left hooks to the body, Danny's relentless pressure and constant combinations forced Van Poetsch to focus on avoiding the punches rather than firing back.
Ahrens seemed to fade in the fourth. Van Poetsch, far and away the toughest opponent Danny has faced, went for broke in the final round. Ahrens continuously backed up and was often on the ropes. Van Poetsch landed a hard right in the round, his best punch of the contest.
After the fight, Danny acknowledged to Barry Toberman of The Jewish Chronicle, "The last round could have been better. I was a bit tired and my hand was a bit low, but this is something I’ll work on when I am back in the gym. I've had a long break since my last fight and it was difficult getting back into a rhythm."
Referee Robert Williams scored the bout 40-37; three rounds for Ahrens and one even. The Jewish Boxing Blog scored the bout 39-37 for Ahrens (4-0, one KO), giving the final round to Van Poetsch (3-4).
Ahrens is only 20 years old and has tremendous power and hand speed. He possesses a fighter's mentality and is willing to throw numerous combinations. However, he rarely jabbed and switched to southpaw to little avail.
Van Poetsch never threw a punch while Ahrens was in a left-handed stance, but Danny throws slow arm punches as a lefty; he's much better from the orthodox stance. Defensively, Kid wasn't as open while throwing a punch as he's been in the past. He crouched under punches, which was effective in avoiding the blows, but didn't put Ahrens in good position to counter. Save for a couple of sharp one-two combinations during this last fight, the young man throws looping punches.
Criticism aside, Ahrens is a decorated amateur with the makings of an outstanding professional. If he can continue to improve, the expectations for Danny are very high.

Ahrens Fight Doesn't Happen
Danny "Kid" Ahrens was scheduled to fight for the fourth time in his career on June 22. But that fight., scheduled to take place in England, didn't happen.
Last February, Ahrens's manager, Robert Waterman, told Barry Toberman, "He could have fought a dozen times by [the end of 2014]." But so far, Ahrens has fought three times against limited competition. He will be inactive for at least five months at this point.
This is a slow pace for a 19 year old with promise. Ahrens last fought in early February. He was scheduled to fight in April and against this past Saturday, but neither bout occurred.

Ahrens, Groenteman Update
Junior middleweight Danny "Kid" Ahrens (3-0, one KO) is scheduled to fight in Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England this Saturday, according to Bob French. This would be Danny's second fight there. Ahrens is coming off of a KO victory against Andrew Patterson last February.
Barry Groenteman (8-5-2, 2 KOs) is scheduled to fight Innocent Anyanwu (21-8-3, 13 KOs) for the Dutch junior welterweight title on October 14 at the Theater Carré in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Anyanwu has two fights scheduled before then. He is 0-7-1 in his last eight fights after starting his career 20-0-2.
Ahrens's bout is scheduled for four rounds against an opponent to be determined. Groenteman's bout is scheduled for ten rounds.

Ahrens Wins Third Fight
Junior middleweight Danny Ahrens notched his first knockout in his third pro fight after stopping Andrew Patterson in the second round last Saturday at The Arena in Peterborough, England.
Wearing black trunks with a white Star of David over the left thigh, Ahrens came forward and unleashed combinations from the outset. Patterson decided to stop throwing combinations a few seconds after the fight began and allowed himself to be pushed to the ropes. Ahrens quelled what little attack Patterson did mount by alternately keeping a high guard and ducking the shots.
In the second round, Ahrens continued to batter his lesser opponent. Patterson actually tried to throw back, which made referee Kieran McCann's stoppage at 1:17 in the second a little curious. Ahrens is now 3-0 with one KO and Patterson falls to 5-38-3 with 4 KOs.
Danny's aggressiveness, hard jab, and combination punching were his best attributes in this fight. But he was far too square while in punching range. Had he faced an opponent trying to win, that would have been a big issue. Ahrens also spent some of the fight as a southpaw despite his success in an orthodox stance. He wasn't as effective as a lefty.
His managerial team, led by Robert Waterman, is moving the 19 year old slowly, an understandable progression for a young kid with high hopes. The combined record at the time the Tel Aviv native met his first three opponents was 16-107-9, which is something less than stellar.
Ahrens is scheduled to get back into the ring on April 5 at Civic Hall in Grays, England.

The Year That Was
This was the year of the cancelled fight in Jewish boxing. After an impressive win in January and signing with Lou DiBella, Ran Nakash came in overweight in June and was ousted from a South African cruiserweight tournament before throwing a single punch as a result. Yuri Foreman was poised to make his comeback to the ring in November, but his fight was cancelled because of damage inflicted by Hurricane Sandy.
Isaac Chilemba was scheduled to fight on HBO against Zsolt Erdei in September. Erdei injured himself in training and Chilemba's fight against late sub Rayco Saunders was not televised. Dmitriy Salita's proposed scrap with Ismael El Massoudi never came to be. Barry Groenteman and Danny Netzer also experienced fights being nixed.
Cletus Seldin and Mike Brooks both stayed undefeated and Danny Ahrens won his first two pro fights. But Boyd Melson, Zachary Wohlman, and Netzer all suffered their lone career defeat in 2012. Melson and Wohlman not only suffered a loss, but both had a fight resulting in a frustrating draw.
Melson's loss was a close decision against an undefeated prospect who Boyd knocked down twice. His draw came in a fight Melson deserved to win by a wide margin. Wohlman was stopped in his loss against a journeyman. He came in overweight partly because of a hiccup in maintaining his sobriety, according to an interview on KLEAN Radio. His draw was the result of an accidental headbutt and a quirk in the California rules in a fight he was controlling.
Next year looks promising for fans of Jewish boxers. Foreman, Chilemba, Salita, Melson, Seldin, Brooks, and Groenteman have all either signed or been rumored to fight within the first two months of 2013. Foreman is on the comeback trail, Chilemba is close to achieving a title fight and a spot on HBO, and Salita has been consistently stepping up on his way to another title shot. Melson, Seldin, Brooks, Ahrens, and Wohlman are all prospects to watch in the new year. And super flyweight champion Carolina Duer hopes to build off of her four 2012 wins.

Ahrens Wins Again
Danny "Kid" Ahrens won his second professional fight last night at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, England. Ahrens defeated Rick Boulter on points. Referee Richard Williams granted Ahrens the decision by the score of 40-36.
Ahrens sauntered to the ring underneath a white hood to the sound of Guns 'N Roses's Welcome to the Jungle. Once the bout started, Ahrens captured the center of the ring. He eschewed the jab in favor of bobbing and weaving his way inside. Boulter, a southpaw from Lincoln, England, kept his right hand low and futilely attempted to block Ahrens's straight rights with his shoulder.
Boulter landed one big shot in the first round. It was absorbed by Ahrens's face, which showed no consternation as a result of the blow. At the end of the round, Danny nailed Boulter with two left hooks. Boulter went hurling into the corner and Ahrens showed an instinctive aggression by jumping on his wounded opponent. But the bell sounded and Boutler was saved.
Rick Boulter is no world beater. He has only one win compared to now thirty losses and three draws. But he knows how to survive. On the rare occasion he decided to attack, his punches landed on Danny's gloves. His nose bled from the second round onward. As a result, Boulter held relentlessly in the third and fourth rounds. The excessive holding served to stifle Ahrens's attack.
Ahrens, who is 5'8" and weighed 156 for the fight, was the aggressor throughout. He periodically switched to southpaw, a stance that was less effective than when he was orthodox. The "Kid" often stood squarely in front of his taller opponent, who weighed in at 156.75 pounds for this contest, but did not need to worry about presenting a bigger target as Boulter exhibited very little offense.
There's no shame in the fact that Ahrens didn't stop a fighter with a 1-30-3 record as Boutler has only been stopped thrice in his career. This was his 15th fight on 2012. Danny Ahrens advances to 2-0.

Ahrens Wins Debut
Daniel Aharonov, fighting under the name of Danny 'Kid' Ahrens, won his professional debut last Friday. Ahrens defeated Kevin McCauley on points in a four-rounder at the Camden Centre in London, England.
A noted amateur, Ahrens is a 5'9" light middleweight from Israel. He weighed 152 pounds for this fight while McCauley was 158. Referee Robert Williams scored the fight 40-37. Ahrens is now 1-0; McCauley falls to 10-42-3 with zero KOs.
